Hyrox Katowice Race Guide

Hyrox Katowice brings the race to Upper Silesia — Poland's industrial heartland turned modern events hub. Katowice has invested heavily in its convention and events infrastructure, making it a natural host for large-scale fitness events.

The venue

Hyrox Katowice takes place at one of the city's major event venues in the Katowice city center area. The Międzynarodowe Centrum Kongresowe (MCK) and the adjacent Spodek arena complex form the primary events district.

MCK, located right next to the iconic Spodek arena, offers modern, spacious exhibition halls well-suited for the Hyrox course layout. The venue is centrally located and easily accessible.

Area: Plac Sławika i Antalla 1, 40-163 Katowice (MCK/Spodek complex)

Getting there

Public transport

Katowice has an efficient bus and tram network:

  • Tram: Lines stop at Spodek or Katowice Centrum — a 5-minute walk to the venue
  • Bus: Multiple lines serve the Spodek area from all parts of the city
  • From Katowice Główny (main train station): a 10–15 minute walk through the city center, or one tram stop

By car

Katowice is at the intersection of the A4 (east-west) and A1 (north-south) motorways, making it accessible from across southern Poland and beyond.

Parking options:

  • Venue parking — Limited spaces near MCK/Spodek. Arrive very early or use alternatives.
  • Galeria Katowicka — The shopping center next to the train station has a large underground parking garage, a 10-minute walk from the venue.
  • Street parking — Available in surrounding streets but metered and limited.

By train

Katowice Główny is a major rail junction:

  • From Warsaw: 2.5–3 hours (PKP Intercity)
  • From Kraków: 1–1.5 hours
  • From Wrocław: 2.5 hours
  • From the Czech Republic (Ostrava): 1.5 hours

The train station is within walking distance of the venue — no additional transport needed.

From the airport

Katowice Pyrzowice Airport (KTW) is approximately 35km north of the city:

  • Airport bus (AP): Direct to Katowice station, approximately 50 minutes, ~33 PLN
  • Taxi/Uber: 35–45 minutes, approximately 100–150 PLN

Alternatively, Kraków Balice Airport (KRK) is approximately 80km away, with frequent train and bus connections to Katowice (1.5 hours).

Accommodation

City center (walking distance to venue)

The best option for race day. Katowice's city center has grown significantly in hotel options:

  • Hotels along ul. Mariacka and ul. Stawowa — the heart of the dining and nightlife district
  • Modern chain hotels near the train station (Novotel, ibis, Hampton by Hilton)
  • Budget options along Aleja Korfantego

Nearby cities

If Katowice accommodation is fully booked, consider:

  • Chorzów — 10 minutes by tram, home to Silesia Park (Śląski Park Kultury i Wypoczynku)
  • Gliwice — 30 minutes by train, a university city with good hotel options
  • Sosnowiec — 15 minutes by train

The Upper Silesian metropolitan area is highly connected, making nearby cities viable.

Local training spots

CrossFit gyms

  • CrossFit Silesia — Well-equipped box with sleds, rowers, and SkiErg
  • CrossFit Katowice — Central location with Hyrox-relevant equipment

Contact gyms ahead for drop-in availability during race week.

Running routes

  • Park Kosciuszki — Katowice's central park, a 10-minute walk from the venue. Good for a shakeout run with paved paths and some hills.
  • Silesia Park (Park Śląski) — One of the largest urban parks in Europe, located in neighboring Chorzów. Extensive trails, a planetarium, and a stadium. Reachable by tram in 20 minutes.
  • Dolina Trzech Stawów (Valley of Three Ponds) — A green area in southern Katowice with paths around three lakes. Flat terrain, approximately 4km loop.

Gym alternatives

If CrossFit boxes are full, several commercial gyms in the center have rowers and basic functional equipment. CityFit and Zdrofit locations are open long hours with day-pass options.

Post-race

Katowice has transformed from an industrial city to a cultural and culinary destination:

  • Ulica Mariacka — The main nightlife and restaurant street. Dozens of bars, restaurants, and cafes in a pedestrian zone.
  • Nikiszowiec — A historic workers' settlement (15 minutes by bus), now a cultural landmark with galleries and unique architecture. Worth a visit.
  • Silesia City Center — Large shopping mall if you need anything post-race.
  • Local food — Try Silesian specialties: żur śląski (sour rye soup), kluski śląskie (Silesian dumplings), rolada z modrą kapustą (beef roulade with red cabbage).

For coaches

The Katowice event attracts athletes from across southern Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Use the Hyrox Pacing Calculator to prepare segment targets and the Hyrox Race Day Checklist for complete race-day preparation.

Indoor convention center venues like MCK tend to produce consistent conditions — no wind, no weather variables. This makes pacing more predictable, which is an advantage for well-prepared athletes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Hyrox Katowice?

The venue is in the MCK/Spodek complex in central Katowice, easily reachable on foot from the main train station (10–15 minute walk through the city center). Trams stop at Spodek or Katowice Centrum, just a 5-minute walk from the venue. If you're driving, Katowice sits at the intersection of the A4 and A1 motorways, but parking near MCK/Spodek is limited — the best option is the large underground garage at Galeria Katowicka (next to the train station), a 10-minute walk away. From Katowice Pyrzowice Airport, the AP airport bus runs directly to the station in about 50 minutes (~33 PLN), or a taxi takes 35–45 minutes.

What time should I arrive at Hyrox Katowice?

Plan to be at the MCK venue at least 60 minutes before your wave start — 90 minutes is better if it's your first race. Doors open approximately 2 hours before the first wave. You'll need time for check-in, bib and chip collection, changing, and warming up inside the venue. Indoor venues like MCK get warm quickly once athletes start racing, so dress lighter than you would for outdoor training. Use the Hyrox Race Day Checklist to prepare everything the night before, and set your final pacing targets during warm-up. If you're storing bags at Galeria Katowicka lockers, build in extra time for the walk.

Where can I train in Katowice before the race?

CrossFit Silesia and CrossFit Katowice both have Hyrox-relevant equipment including sleds, rowers, and SkiErgs — contact them ahead of time for drop-in availability during race week. For a shakeout run, Park Kosciuszki is a 10-minute walk from the venue with paved paths and gentle hills. For a longer session, Silesia Park (Park Slaski) in neighboring Chorzów is one of the largest urban parks in Europe, reachable by tram in 20 minutes. Dolina Trzech Stawów in southern Katowice offers a flat ~4km loop around three lakes. If CrossFit boxes are full, commercial gyms like CityFit and Zdrofit in the center have rowers and basic functional equipment with day-pass options.
